A Write-fest

Currently Listening To: Hunters Of The Sky, by Mastodon

So I normally can only write about 11k in one day. However, I wanted to see how much I could possibly write in one day, given all I had to do.

Let’s run through the timeline. To help me out. I was listening to various albums and at the end of each of them, I marked down the time and word count:

1:20PM – I got up. I meant to go bed pretty early, but the news of the Jerry Sandusky trial kept me up close to midnight. After warming up I begin writing.

2:28pm (2,271 words) – I’ve gone through Avenged Sevenfold’s Waken the Fallen and achieved a solid start to this challenge.

3:05AM (3,458 words) – As I’m listening to Van Halen’s 1984, I got hot and cruised by some scenes.

4:30AM (5,523 words) – After the conclusion of Dream Theater’s Octavarium, I realize my productivity is slowly falling. I decide to call it a night, since I’ve broken 50,000 words total and get some sleep.

9:45AM – After some sleep, I shower and eat a quick breakfast.

10:27AM (6,444 words) – After some of Rob Zombie’s Hellbilly Deluxe, I get into a nice rhythm with my writing.

11:13AM (8,128 words) – I carry the momentum and Blink 182’s Dude Ranch fuels my writing to new heights.

12:21PM (10,042 words) – I conclude the morning rush with Avenged Sevenfold’s Self Titled Album and decide it’s time to get some lunch and go outside.

1:45PM – I come back, full with a turkey burger and ready to continue.

2:56PM (11,616 words) – I’ve burned through the protein and Foo Fighters’ The Colour and The Shape. I’m feeling confident about hitting 15,000.

3:45PM (12,713 words) – I was losing focus here and there, but Rare Candy’s Bomber Blue/Gallant Green energizes me to write some kick-ass scenes.

5:03PM (14,042 words) – After some more furious typing and Dead Kennedys’ Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, I’m beginning to exhibit symptoms of burn-out.  I decide to go do other things.

7:30PM – I head out to dinner and decide to watch some baseball while I’m at it.

9:45PM (15,765 words) – I begin the night shift with a run-through of Metroid Metal’s Varia Suite during which I hit my next milestone.

10:55PM (~18,500 words) – At this time my head was hurting and my fingers were aching. The conclusion of Coheed and Cambria’s Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Vol. 1: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness gives me some willpower to fight on. I was close to 20,000. I was so tired, I forgot to write down the exact word count.

11:45PM (20,067 words) – The charging power of Muse’s Black Holes and Revelations gives me the final push to hit the 20k. I laugh as I realize what I just accomplished.

Wil I do this again? Probably not. But it was a great way for me to really let loose and hit some milestones that I always fell short on.

Day Twenty – A Long Day (and a serious request)

Song of the Day: Life in the Mines, from the game Donkey Kong Country (GBC version)

Word Count: 44,762

Well, as many of you know, today is the summer solstice. Some of you also know that there’s a heat wave going around.

To be honest, I didn’t expect to write over 2,000 words today. I had planned today to be a light day, but I guess I was so eager to write I just managed to find time.

So in a previous post, I said I was planning something big. Here’s what I’m planning (and work with me on this):

I need to lose weight. Big time. Right now rocks orbit me as I walk (kidding).

As a way of motivation I want to lose weight based on the number of words I write for this month.

No, not lose over 40,000 pounds, but burn that many calories during the rest of the year.

As a general rule of thumb, it takes 3500 calories to burn a pound of fat right? So what I would plan to do is divide the number of words I write this month by 3500 and try to lose that many pounds by the end of the year.

An example: We take the current word count and divide that by 3500. We get…12.77. A bit low but I still got 10 more days to write.

Of course, if I hit my goal, there’s nothing stopping me from going forward.

I’m already making some lifestyle changes already, but a little extra motivation never hurts!

What do you guys think?

Day Two – I’ve gone loose!

Song of the Day: The Wolf Is Loose, by Mastodon

Current Word Count: 5758

After a rocking start, I’ve kept up the momentum and wrote over three thousand words.

Before I got to writing however, I treated myself for at least getting a good start:

A big burger.

Breakfast and Lunch!

That, my readers, is a turkey burger with a fried egg, crispy onion strips, olives and mixed organic greens. The sauce is a chipotle aioli.

Since I got up just past breakfast, I figured I would make it a brunch. The bartender provided some chuckles as well. Apparently a little spider was hiding on my hat. She encouraged me to spared the little critter. We made sure it got out safely.

Once I was full, I came back home and got straight to writing (along with laundry).   The weather is just perfect right now so I’m more relaxed when I write.

This year, I want to try and limit the use of Write or Die. It’s useful, but I don’t want to rely on it too much. However, if you find yourself constantly hitting that back button or freezing up while writing, this tool might be for you!

I think I can hit fifty thousand for sure. I just want to break past sixty thousand this time around. Let’s see what happens.

I need a shower, and some dinner.
